The Chance Carousel

Carousel rides were by $1 tokens. The 3-row Americana Themed Carousel with a pastel horizontal striped canopy and hundreds of lights was added when The Enchanted Forest was re-opened by JHP Development in the summer of 1994 in conjunction with The Family Funjungle. The admission to The Enchanted Forest was $2.95 per child. Adults with children were free. Refreshments including hot dogs were for sale from a vendor wheeled cart near the picnic area. The park was opened daily from 10am to 8pm. The Family Funjungle was an early video arcade with a ceiling-high climbing maze that delighted many young squealing children.

On Monday, April 19, 2004, Chris Chamberlin in Guest Operations at the Baltimore Zoo provided the following information to me, Nan Sherman, on the phone in reference to The Carousel removed from The Enchanted Forest earlier this month.

The Carousel was given to Ted Shaw, the owner of Crown Food Services, Inc. by Kimco Realty Corporation. Shaw’s company provides both amusements and food service to The Baltimore Zoo. The Baltimore Zoo wants the public to understand, The Carousel is now owned by Ted Shaw and not the Baltimore Zoo. The Baltimore Zoo and other zoos around the country have had multiple successful joint ventures with Crown Food Services, Inc.

At this point, Ted Shaw intends is to refurbish The Carousel and put it into service in the Baltimore Zoo for a revenue sharing partnership. The Carousel will require an estimated $125,000 to $150,000 in restoration over a period of the next six to twelve months. Ted Shaw is financially responsible for the restoration and the costs involved for removing The Carousel from The Enchanted Forest property. If all goes well, we can ride The Carousel again in the spring of 2005 at the Baltimore Zoo.

Ted Shaw will have his father’s company Shaw & Sons Amusements do the restoration. Shaw & Sons Amusements is a traveling amusement and carnival company headquartered in Linthicum, Maryland. Ted Shaw is not a part of Shaw & Sons.

The Carousel is a Chance with the only means of identification being a 1990 Florida inspection sticker. Ted Shaw has requested an owner’s manual from Chance.

The Baltimore Zoo has been renamed the Maryland Zoo. The whereabouts of The Enchanted Forest Carousel are still unknown. The Enchanted Forest Carousel not been returned to the Maryland Zoo. The Maryland Zoo opened their season on Saturday, March 03, 2007. They unveiled a NEW carousel. This IS NOT The Carousel from The Enchanted Forest. I am extremely said to report the sad fate of our beloved Enchanted Forest Carousel.
